LONG-DISTANCE SWIM.
DAYNS REACHES HAMILTON.
CHEERED ON BT CROWDS ASHORE. NO SIGN" OP DISTRESS. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) HAMILTON, this day. Charles V. Dayns, Government Veterinarian at Hamilton, in an attempt to create a world's record for a fresh water swim, by swimming in the YVaikato from Cambridge to Taupiri, a distance of between 35 and 40 miles, entered the water at Cambridge at seven this morning and arrived at the Hamilton traffic bridge at 11.40, having swum 16 miles. He was swimming strongly and showing no signs of distress. Ho was greeted bv crowds along the banks and on both bridges, who cheered him on his way. He responded freely. Passing through Hamilton he was accompanied by two other swimmers and a launch carrying Mr. H. T. Gillies, Crown solicitor, Mr. R. D. McFarlane, solicitor and a Press representative.
At his present rate of progress Davns is expected to reach Taupiri between six and seven o'clock to-night.
