A MEMORABLE MATCH.
The match that ended this morning in a victory for Auckland will rank as one of the best of the series. It was hard fought from start to finish, and fortune swung to and fro in the way that makes cricket such a delightfully uncertain game. The Wellington team, which are one of the strongest batting sides, that any province has ever put into the field, | really lost the game when they made! but 182 in the first innings. The visitors i toiled manfully to restore the balance, but did not quite succeed. Auckland had an anxious hour or two in the second innings. The last few Wellington wickets fell for "a song," and the last Auckland wickets might have been* similarly unproductive.. The winners are to be congratulated on their fine victory. The professionals played a prominent part in the match, but honours were easy. Jln view of the remarks of a Wellington resident, that the whole Wellington team should be sent to England as the New Zealand t side, there will be some good-humoured chaff at ellington's expense, but let no one under- | rate the worth of the visitors. They are a fine i side, and no Aucklander would care to say i confidently that in a return match the result | would be the same. |
