TYPOGRAPHICAL UNION.
THE ANNUAL MEETING. QUESTION FOR BALLOT. The annual meeting of the Auckland Typographical Union was held on Saturday evening, in the Trades Hall. Mr. R. Taylor (retiring president) occupied the chair. The report and balance-sheet for the past half year showed the union to be in a prosperous condition. Nineteen members had joined, and 15 had left the district or the trade, leaving the total membership at 324. Receipts for the half year amounted to £349 .15/8, which, with the balance from June 30. made the total on the income side £ 1607 14/5. The expenditure amounted to £326 12/3, the principal items being Biennial Conference expenses £65 18/8, and out-of-work, travelling and other allowances £88 6/. The balance to the union's credit was £1281 2/2, an increase of £23 3/5 for the six months. The total assets of the union amount to £1328 2/2. The report, which dealt at length with many matters connected with the trade and the union, was adopted. The following officers and delegates were elected for the year: President, Mr. T. Phillips; vice-president, Mr. J. J. Lock; trustees, Messrs. F. Armiger and J. C. Chappell (re-elected); secretary-treasurer, Mr. P. A. Cleveland (re-elected); general board members, Messrs. R. Taylor and P. J. Koefoed; assessors in connection with new award, Messrs. P. J. Koefoed and J. J. Lock. A circular was received from the Trades and Labour Council asking whether the union was in favour of the council merging with the Alliance of Labour. Messrs. A. Rosser and H. Campbell addressed the meeting on the subject, and a discussion ensued. L'ltimately it was agreed that a ballot of the members be taken on the question.
