BORSTAL FOR "JOY-RIDER."

TERM OF THREE YEARS. YOUTH OF 17 TOOK SEVERAL CARS. A youth aged 17 admitted in the Police Court this morning that lie had, without colour of right, converted to his own use several motor cars and trucks, and lie also pleaded guilty to a charge of having stolen an overcoat, valued at £7 7/, shoes valued at 30/, and a brief bag and contents, valued at £2 15/. Accused, when caught by a constable, confessed to having converted several vehicles to his own use. Those mentioned in the charge-sheets were a car, valued at £11.3, the property of Horace Austin Hoare; a motor truck, valued at £100, tlic property of Albert Sidney Ridewood: another car worth £120, owned by Noel Cole, and a-half-ton truck, valued at £110, owned by Alfred Lomas, \\ hen questioned by the constable concerning the overcoat and brief bag, accused said he had found these in one of the cars which he had taken. He had driven to the Domain, where he threw them away in The Drive. The constable accompanied accused to the Domain, where a thorough search was made, without result. Two of the trucks were damaged, it was stated by Senior-Sergeant Edwards, while tools and a tyre were stolen from another of the vehicles. "There is only one thing to be done with this boy." said Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M. "His father cannot look after him. In fact, I think t.ie father approves of the idea of having him sent to the Borstal.'' "I think it would be to his advantage," said the father, who was standing near the dock. "I'm quite sure it would," rapped out Mr. Hunt. "I'm going to send him to the Borstal for three years." On the application of the father, the magistrate decided to order suppression of the boy's nae, not so much for the sake of the boy, "who probably would like to see his name in print." as for the sake of the father. Mr. Hunt thought he was justified in making this order in any case, since the boy was very young.
