CITY WATER SUPPLY.
COMMITTEE TO CONSIDER.
PIPELINE OR RESERVOIRS,
"That the 'City Council take into consideration the necessity for providing an emergency pipeline through the medium of a tunnel or otherwise from one of the existing large reservoirs to the point of filtration," was the recommendation contained in a motion by Mr. A. J. JEnJricau, which was adopted last night.
It was decided that the Waterworks Committee should consider the matter, after the engineer and waterworks superintendent had reported.
The council cannot afford io take the risk of a complete breakdown, said Mr. Entrican. Slips might carry away the existing pipelines at any time.
Mr. A. Thompson, chairman of the Waterworks Committee, said the committee had already given consideration to this question, and was still carrying on its investigations. The council would have to decide as a matter of policy whether it would go in for reservoir extension in the city or provide additional pipelines from the sources of supply. It had been estimated that extra storage accommodation for water in the city would cost approximately £25,000 for each additional three million gallons, "whereas a pipeline connecting the sources of supply with the present mains could be laid for approximately £50,000. Such a pipeline would deliver four million gallons of water daily.
