CONTROL OF RACING.
s The control of race meetings, as far as - actual running is concerned, is a matter which s the New Zealand Racing Conference would do 1 well to consider at the earliest possible 1 moment. On all hands complaint is heard 5 about careless riding and inconsistent running, E but very little seems to be done by club 1 stewards to eliminate these practices. The : stipendiary stewards attend meetings, but ' they are subservient to the stewards of the ' club, who, in many instances, know very 1 little about the sport, and when a case is ; taken before the committee the offender frequently gets off, or the punishment is quite J inadequate to meet the case. It is not unfair to assume that pressure has been brought to bear, or that personal acquaintance has warped the committee's judgment. Now, sir, if the control was handed over to a committee of stipendiary stewards, who, without fear or favour, would award proper punishment,, the same as the stipendiary stewards in Australia have done, it would have a most beneficial effect on the sport, and help largely to remove the doubt in the public mind that many races are not decided on their merits. CLEAN SPORT.
