HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT,
BUTTER QUIET, CHEESE STEADY
The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, dated Janufrom the High Commissioner for £se\v Zealand, London:— Butter.—The market is quiet. Official quotations are: New Zealand, finest salted (new season's, 172/ to 174/ per cwt (l/6Ms per lb, unsalted 180/ to 182/, other qualities 162/ to 166/, finest salted (stored) 166/ to 168/, other qualities 160/ to 162/ per cwt. .New Zealand Control Board minimum Prices are: Finess salted, 174/; first grade, Australian.—Salted, 166/ to 170/ up to 172/; unsalted, 172/ to 176/; other qualities, 146/ to 166/. Argentine.—Unsalted, 158/ to 162/; exceptional 164/; other qualities, 144/ to 156/. Danish.—lßo/ to 182/. Cheese. The market is steady. Official quotations are: — English.—Finesfr farmers', 108/ to 112/ per cwt. Canadian. —Finest coloured and white, to 98/. New Zealand.—Coloured, 94/ to 95/ per cwt (lOd per lb); white, 93/ to 94/, New Zealand Control Board minimum prices are: Coloured, finest, 95/; first grade, 94/; white, finest, 94/; first grade, 83/. Australian.—Coloured and white, 92/ to 93/. Estimated stocks of cheese on January 1 at London, Liverpool and Bristol: Canadian and American, 133,600 boxes; New Zealand and Australian. 38.350 crates, against 139,400 boxes and 30,400 crates at same time last year. A shipment of New Zealand produce arrived this week per s.s. Hororata. Tallow. The market has been steadier during the last fortnight and a fair business has been done. Official quotations are:— Mutton: Fine, 39/ per cwt; #air to good, 36/6 to 38/; dark to dull, 35/ to 35/6. Beef: Sweet and/or mixed, 37/ to 40/; fair to good, 35/6 to 37/; dark to dull, 34/ to 35/. Mixed: Fair to good, 35/ to 36/6; dark to dull, 34/ to 34/6. Gut, etc.; 32/ to 34/. Hemp. The Manila market is easier this week, but closes with a firmer tone. "J" grade shipment quoted £46 10/. output last year 1,254,259 bales against 1,241,078 in the previous year. Stocks in Great Britain on January 1 3000 bales, against 25,000, stocks in Manila 115.000 bales against 153,000 for same time last year. Sisal market dull. No. 1 Tanganyika offered £41 5/. New Zealand market easier with sellers of Highpoints at £37 for any position. Fair January/March shipments £36. Buyers afloat for fair £36 5/ to £36 10/. Tow afloat in demand on the basis of £26 for No: 2 quality. Wool. The Bradford market is quiet, but quotations for tops are well maintained on last basis. Eggs. Prices have declined, but small business has been done. Present quotations are: — English, Dutch, Danish, 20/ to 24/ per long 100; Belgian, 17/ to 18/; Australian, 16/ to 17/; South African, 16/ to 17/; Polish, Egyptian, 9/ to 12/6. Grain. Oats.—There is a little more inquiry for best English. Fine bold white selling at 27/ to 28/. The market is quiet, but steady for imported. Plate afloat sold at 21/3 and January/February shipments offered at 20/. Chilean offered 22/6.. Nominal value of New Zealand "A" grade cartons January/February shipments, 28/. Peas. The maple market quiet. Spot stocks: are small and value maintained. NewZealand February /March shipments offered 83/6, March/April shipments 82/. Tasmanian January/February shipments offered 91/. Good inquiry for blues on account of shortage of English and Dutch marrowfats. Tasmanian and New Zealand quoted £18 to £22 per ton ex store. Beans. English in good request, best winter offered up to 48/. Spring quoted at 52/. Chinese horse afloat offered £10 8/9 per ton.
