PARNELL'S GREAT RECOVERY.
CENTURY STAND AT CRITICAL STAGE. With. Dow an absentee and four "wickets down for 64, it did not look as though Parnell B would overtake 'Varsity B's tally of 207, made on December 18. The No. 3 wicket at Eden Park was, however, in the batsmen's favour when Turbott and Stehr, who had added a dozen before Christmas, resumed the fifth wicket partnership. They made hay while the sun shone and before Stehr got marching orders, with a nicely-com-piled half-century to his credit, the pair had added another 99 runs, a total of 111 for their stand. This put the Parnellites in clover, though 45 were still required for victory. Tnanks again to Turbott, who continued on his merry way until he had rung on 79 (including a couple of fives) and the substitution of Stewart for Dow, 'Varsity had eventually to submit to defeat by eleven run—Parnell's innings closing for 218 runs. Stewart played the rock at a very critical stage and only two runs were required to win when his stumps were skittled by Inder. The knights of learning had cruel luck after a leg-bye had been run for the equalising single, as fine-lepr was unable to get a grasp of a catch Bell (last man) sent his way, off Jackson, who had bowled to that very end. Had the chance been accepted the game would have resulted in a 207 runs' tie. Another leg-bve saw 'Varsity's score topped. Although 'Varsity fielded minus two leading bowlers, Binmore (six for 46), Professor Burbidge and skipper Waddingham trundled really well. The lastnamed bowled without luck, and as regards his captaincy the opening pair, Binmore and Inder, were kept on a trifle too long.
