COST OF LIVING.
INTERESTING COMPARISON. NEW ZEALAND AND BRITAIN. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") WELLINGTON, this day. In the opinion of Mr. J. B. McEwari, Mayor of Betone, who has just returned from a visit to the Old Country, the cost of living, generally speaking, is as dear in England as in the Dominion, although by exercising economies such as the use of margarine instead of butter, living could be made cheaper. Having a knowledge of the grocery, ironmongery and crockery trades, Mr. McEwan was able to make comparisons, and was surprised to find that to some extent New Zealand benefited by the dnmping of goods. A well-known brand of matches, for instance, which was supplied to the trade in New Zealand at 9d, was lOd in England, and the reason given was that England's foreign trade, was bolstered up by its Home business. In regard to farming, the only thing England needed was New Zealand's sun. Net* Zealand produce was getting a good hearing, and was receiving publicity.
