CHARGE OF THEFT.
TOmiG SEAMAN CHARGES. ARMY HOME AS A BASE. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") WELLINGTON, this day. "It appears that accused has been using the Army Home as a base from which he comes forth to steal," said Chief Detective Ward, in the Police Court to-day, of Leslie Robert Ashfield, a seaman, 20 years of age, who admitted the theft of a suitcase containing articles of a value of £35 from a motor car belonging to Norman Henry Fraser. The Chief Detective added that accused came to the Dominion as a seaman eight months ago, and had already served a month for theft, and had also been convicted and ordered to come up for sentence on a charge of vagrancy. Of the articles which had been in the suitcase, £13 worth had been sold; and not recovered. Mr. Riddell remanded accused to appear on Friday for sentence; in the meantime the probation officer is to report.
