WALKER SHIELD. | WELLINGTON WIN TROPHY. CANTERBURY HOLD AUCKLAND. By the failure of Auckland to defeat Canterbury on Saturday on the Domain in the New Zealand Suburban Associa- . tion's annual Christmas tournament for the Walker Shield, the Wellington representatives became the holders of the trophy. The respective records of the three f competing teams at the end of the meeting were:— P. W. L. D. Wellington .... 2 1 0 1 Auckland 2 0 0 2 Canterbury .... 2 0 1 1 The shield was presented at the Auck-land-Canterbury match to the successful team by Mr. J. Elliot, president of the New Zealand Suburban Association, who after warmly congratulating Wellington, expressed his high appreciation of the very sportsmanlike manner in which the tournament had been conducted, a way which had made the whole competition one of sheer delight to all associated with it. In appreciation of the splendid services rendered throughout the competition by them as umpires, Messrs. J. Malloy and W. Johnson were each presented with silver mounted walking sticks. Auckland had been expected to defeat Canterbury on the strength of the previous day's play, when they put together in their first innings 296, but Canterbury responded with 234. The compiling of these scores left little time available for the second innings, and Auckland declared at 128 for one wicket, but time was up before Canterbury could be dismissed, and the match was drawn. Badeley, Tinkler and Stotter each topped the 50 in Auckland's first innings, and five of the Canterbury batsmen were dismissed for 64, but B. Morris and A. Cullen took the score to 188 before the latter played on a ball from Tinkler. Morris with his back to the wall played a splendid innings, and in his 111 hit eleven fours and one six. His shots were mostly between point and third man. , Turner and Roberts did great service for Auckland with the bat in their second innings, and scored very rapidly, and Bushell and Williams got Canterbury wickets cheaply in the second innings, but the time available was too short for them to secure victory, though they made a valiant effort.
