THE A.R.C. MEETING

COMMENDATION WINS DERBY. FOOTFALL THE BIG HANDICAP. The weather was fine, though dull, for the continuation of the Auckland Racing Club's summer meeting on Saturday. There was a good attendance and the racing was interesting throughout. In the New Year's Hurdle Race Gold Rep fell and W. Ro'.vc, her rider, received injuries to his face and had to be sent to hospital. While contesting the Newmarket Handicap Merry Jest (H. Lee) and Ballymoy (W. H. Jones) fell about the three-furlong post. Lee received internal injuries and Jones abrasions to his face. Both were conveyed to the hospital. The sum of £08,450 10/ was put through the totalisator, compared with £110,652 10/ for the corresponding day last year, a decrease of £12,202. This made a total of £278,603 for the three days, against £337,861, a decrease of £59,258. The Opening Event. Bold Front was the only defection from the EUerslie Handicap, with which the programme opened. Antrim Boy £3694) was favourite, with Haze ( £2543) and Archeno ( £1485) next in request. Antrim Boy was first to show out from Archeno, Haze, Ballachulish, Quondong and Lord Guy. Across the top Antrim Boy was attended by Archeno, Lord Guy, Judge's Box, Haze, Ngarara and Nucleus. The order was practically the same into the straight, where Antrim Boy tired. Archeno took charge at the distance and stalling otf Quondong, won by a length. Lord Guy was three-quar-ters of a length away, third, with Haze, Judge's Box, Ngarara, Antrim Boy, Ballachulish and Nassock next. Mr. T. H. Lowry Again. Chelone was the only one that failed to parade for the Midsummer Handicap, and High Finance (£3505), Cosmetic (£2574) and Royal Ceres (£1586) were the prime fancies. Cosmetic was in charge when the field settled down, from High Finance, Carinthia, Royal Ceres and Doree. Cosmetic and High Finance were first to turn for home from Melissa. Doree and Royal Ceres. High Finance had had enough at the distance, and Cosmetic was left in. front. Then Doree came through, and going on, beat Melissa by half a length, with Thaw three-quarters of a length away third. Carinthia, Cosmetic, Damaris and Royal Ceres followed in that order. The Favourite Falls. Highway (£2212), Rangitahi (£1423) and Pentagram (£1288) were most fancied for the New Year's Hurdle Race. Daddy's Girl led past the stands from Karamu, Royalform, Pentagram, Pendennis, Rangitahi, Peter Maxwell, Archibald, Cureaform and Wedding March, Gold Rep and Highway having fallen at the second and third fences respectively. Karamu was still in front along " the back from Daddy's Girl, Pentagram, Royalform, Pendennis, Rangitahi, Mia Bella, Peter Maxwell and Archibald, Maunga falling at the hurdle at the sixfurlong post. Karamu was first to turn for home from Pentagram, Daddy's Girl, Rangitahi, Mia Bella and Royalform. In a good finish Karamu beat Pentagram by three-quarters of a length, with Daddy's Girl four lengths further back third. Rangitahi, Mia Bella, Royalform and Archibald were next. * Count Cavour Just Beaten. All went to the post for the A.R.C. Handicap with the exception of Eden Hall. Star Stranger (£2761), Te Monanui (£2631) and Desert Glow (£1508) were most in request. Day Guard was first to show out and led past the stands from Papatu, Oreum, Clarinda, Count Cavour, Footfall, Mandane, Barometer, Star Ranger, Desert Glow, Te Monanui, Tanadees, Star Stranger, Ruapapa, Mask, Royal Present, Gala Jacket and Lord Star. Day Guard was still in front along the back with Oreum, Clarinda, Papatu, Footfall, Barometer, Count Cavour, Star Ranger, Desert Glow, Star Stranger, Mandane and Tanadees next. Crossing the top Oreum was in charge from Day Guard, Clarinda, Footfall, Count Cavour, Barometer and Desert Glow. The order was much the same turning for home and in a good finish Footfall got the verdict by three-quarters of a length from Count Cavour, who beat Te Monanui by a neck. Desert Glow, Star Ranger, Star Stranger, Tanadees, Lord Star, Papatu, Mondane, Gold Jacket and Clarinda were next. The Blue Riband. Flying Juliet was scratched for the Great Northern Derby, leaving ten to contest the stake. Commendation (£4815),• Lysander (£2183) , Battlement (£2175) were the favourite division. Seatown was slow to move and Lysander led past the stands from Commendation, True Blood, Battlement, Alloway, Chamour, Phaola, Atareria, Tinokoa and Seatown. Along the back Lysander was just slightly ahead of Commendation with Atareria, Battlement and Alloway next, and Chamour heading the others. At the five furlong post Commendation had run up to Lysander, with Atareria, Alloway, Biattlement and Chamour next. Commendation then drew out and came into the straight well clear of Lysander, Alloway, Atareria. Commendation had no difficulty in winning by five lengths from Lysander, who in a good finish for second place, beat Alloway by a neck. Seatown, Chamour, Battlement, Phaola, Atareria, Tinokoa and True Blood were next. The Hawk at Last. High Pitch (£2781), Limited (£2258) and Ballymoy 11. (£1722) were favourites for the Newmarket Handicap. When the field settled down, Dave, Ballymoy, Limited, Aussie and Licinius were most prominent. Dave and Nancy Lee led into the straight from Aussie, Limited, Tea Bell and The Hawk. The last named drew to the front at the distance and won by a length and a-half from Nancy Lee, who beat Licinius by threequarters of a length. Dave, Aussie, Tea Bell, Limited, High Pitch and Lady Cavendish were next. A Surprise. Paperchase (£2528), Nadarino (£1708) and Le Choucas (£1312) were the selections for the Glasgow Handicap. Nadarino was the leader along the back from King Smock, Delightment, Eh Timi, Merry Damon, Flying Juliet and Mosaic. Entering the straight Nadarino was

attended by Delightment, King Smock, Flying Juliet, Stormy, Eh Timi and Mosaic. In a good finish King Smock won by half a-length from Delightment, who beat Nadarino by a similar distance.
