DIVE CAUSES DEATH.
FATALITY AT RANGITOTO. HEAD STRIKES HIDDEN ROCK. Slipping on a rock at Rangitoto Island on Saturday morning while on his way to bathe, Mr. Percy Warbriek, aged 40, dived into the sea to save falling. He struck his head on a submerged rock and died in the Auckland Hospital yesterday afternoon. Mr. Warbriek was a wharf tally clerk, and lived at 6, Scotia Place, City. With Mrs. Warbriek, he was spending his holidays at Rangitoto, and when the accident took place was going to bathe with a friend, Mr. Vivian Smith. Deceased's wife was near at the time. Mr. Warbriek was unconscious* when taken from the water. First aid was rendered, and he was brought to Auckland by ferry. An inquest was opened this morning before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M. Evidence was given by Maggie Warbrick, who said that her husband was well acquainted with the spot where the accident occurred.
Deceased was a fine swimmer and a very well knowr. yachtsman. He was one of the first to leave New Zealand with the Auckland Infantry Battalion, and was badly wounded on Gallipoli.
