NEW PASTIME.

AERIAL MOUNTAINEERING. REMARKABLE AIR POCKETS. LONDON, December 23. Two aviators have established a new performance in aeroplane mountaineering. They carried out a flight to the top of Helvellyn, a mountain in Wales, 3118 ft liigh, where the airmen landed. The aeroplane landed within 50ft of the edge of a precipice, which dropped sheer for 700 ft. Mr. Leeming, chairman,of tlie Lancashire Aero Club, and Mr. Bert Hinckler, the well-known aviator, were the airmen, and they used an Avro machine. After having landed on the top of the mountain they flew home. Mr. "Leeming said the air pockets encountered were the worst he had ever known. Once the aeroplane dropped like a stone 500 ft. Mr Hinckler was lifted into the air clear of his seat, and a cushion flew overboard. , The airmen said both of them would nave been blown from the machine but i for the fact that they were wearing safety belts by which they were strapped in their seats.
