CUP DAY GOSSIP. C. Davies will ride Town Bank in the Auckland Cup. He was previously secured for Diogenes, but owing to that horse being scratched he was secured for Town Bank. The stands and enclosures at Ellerslie on Boxing Day and the finish of the Auckland Cup will be filmed in order to complete a racing picture that is shortly to be produced in New Zealand. The final gallops will take place at Ellerelie to-morrow morning, and there should be some interesting work. Wenday, West Abbey, Scat, King Smock, and also K. Hannon's and J. T. Jamieson's teams have arrived at Ellerslie. R. E. Thomson will ride either Peter Maxwell or Kangitahi in the Grafton Hurdles. K. Orange has gone to New Plymouth, where he will pilot Winsome Boy and Macroom. There was a little work at Ellerslie this morning. Rapine ran three furlongs on the course proper, while Cimabue got to the end of a similar distance In 38 4-ss. Nippy and Eden Hall went a round of the course proper in 2.7 4-5, Tea Bell and Le Choucas running six furlongs and finishing on terms in 1.20 2-5. King the Bell ana Tea Tree went half a mile in 525. Mandane and York Abbey were worked on No. 2 grass track. TAKAPUNA JOCKEY CLUB. The summer meeting of the Takapuna Jockey Club will be held on Saturday and Monday, January 29 and 31, and the programme appears in this issue. On the first day the Takapuna Cup, of 1400sovs, one mile and a-half, is the chief event, and next in importance comes the Stewards' Handicap, of 550sovs, six furlongs. The Calliope Handicap, a two-year-old event run over five furlongs, ie worth oOOsovs, while the other events are: Trial Stakes of 250sovs, weight Bst, seven furlongs; Orewa High weight Handicap of 300sove, one mile, three furlongs and 40 yards; Ferry Handicap of 275sovs, eeven furlongs; Hauraki Hack Handicap of 325sovs, one mile and a furlong; and Zealandia Handicap of 450sovs, seven furlongs. On the second day the Takapuna Handicap of 800sovs, one mile, three furlongs and 40 yards is the chief item, while the other races are: Moana Handicap of 250sovs, eeven furlongs; Waiwera High weight Handicap of 275sovs, one mile, three furlongs and 40 yards; Devonport Handicap of 250sovs, seven furlongs; Suburban Handicap of 450sovs, cix furlongs; Hobson Handicap of 500sovs, six furlongs; Rangitoto Hack Handicap of 325sovs, one mile and one furlong; and Anniversary Handicap of 450sovs, seven furlongs. This programme is a most attractive one, and Mr. R. Wynyard, the secretary, should have the pleasure of receiving large entries on Friday, January 7, for they close at 5 p.m. on that date. AWAPUNI TRAINING NOTES. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) PALMERSTON NORTH, this day. It was an off morning at Awapuni. The outside of tlie course proper was available, but the majority of the horses were restricted to easy work on the plough. Benmure and Pantler were sent over two rounds of the plough sir a strong pace, the last circuit tnkinß 1.50. Peneus and Inferno were companions over five furlongs on the course proper. Peneus, after waiting for his companion at the start, finished half a length in front in 1.3 1-5. Fresco was given a rouple of rounds at half pace on the plough. Gnrdant anil Kilmoyler ran six furlongs on the course in 1.22. and Mandy and Stream covered five furlongs on the same track in 1.5 l-~>. Mandy finishing in front. Light r:iin fell during the breakfast interval, but it soon cleared off. Royal Damon and Epistle ran five furlongs in l.rs. the former having jx shade the better of matters when the post was reached. Merry Day jumped off at (he mile and a-quarter post, bring picked up by Sottano at the seven-furloim p«s. the full distance being covered in 2.7. Merry Day went well throughout. Royal Time proved a little too good for Bonny Louisa over four furlongs in 33 1-os. Royal Divorce, who has been doing stud duty, has been put into work again, and was trotted on the plough. Royal Ceres was scratched for the Stakes on Tuesday, and Star Shell and John NBd for the ti-st day engagements. The pair are doubtful starters at the meeting.
