THE HOLIDAYS.
AUCKLAND SPORT CARNIVAL A WEEK OF RACING. EVENTS ON LAND AND WATEE. The year-end holidays are usually associated chiefly with the racing carnival in Auckland, with a number of minor sports attractions, but this year is added the New Zealand lawn tennis championships in the holiday week, followed later in the month by the New Zealand swimming championships, and the Dominion bowling tournament, and then, later, the Auckland provincial athletic championships, followed by the New Zealand amateur athletic championships. Interest at the moment, however, centres in the events of the next ten days. Foremost comes the racing programme, consisting of the four days of the Auckland Racing Club's summer meeting at Ellerslie on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday of next week, and the following Monday, and the Auckland Trotting Club's meeting at Alexandra Park on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday of next week. Immediate interest, of course, is centred on the Auckland Cup, which is run at Ellerslie on Monday (Boxing Day). The Dominion tennis tournament will open at the Stanley Street and other courts on Monday, and be continued throughout the week, but to-morrow afternoon a tennis fixture of great interest at the Stanley Street courts will be the match between the visiting N.S.W. team and the Auckland provincial representatives. Cricket, while not looming quite so large as sometimes in the week's events, will be _represented by the Suburban Association's annual town and country tournament matches. It starts with games between the Tramway Club and the Franklin reps, on Victoria Park tomorrow, and the Waikato and the suburban reps on the Domain the same day. On Monday and following days, three country teams as well as Wellington, Christchurch and Auckland reps, will contest the tourney. To-morrow also the annual gala of the Poneonby Swimming Club will be held at the Sheily Beach baths. To-night a fleet of Tieel boats will start on an ocean race from Auckland to Ruseell. Following this they will contest a run from Ilussel to Whangarei, where a regatta will be held on New Year's Day.
The Auckland Centre's bowling tournament will be held on Monday and following days. On Tuesday a boxing contest between Eddie Parker, of New Zealand, and Marcel Thuru, of France, will be held in the Town Hall. The shopping holidays will be Saturday and Monday on each week, but the banks will not re-open until the Wednesday. This evening the shops will observe a late night, and vehicular traffic, including trains, will not be allowed in Queen Street between the hours of 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. Picture theatres will be open to-morrow after 2.30 p.m.
