VETERAN SHIP MASTER.
CAPTAIN VICKERMAI. RETIRES. tO_.G SERVICE AT SEA. (By TelegTaphi—Special to " Star.") WELLINGTON, this day. Captain F. L; Vickernianj "father" of New Zealand shipmasterSj has retired ashore at Nelson; after serving the sea well over 59 years, 50 of whibh were .on the NeW Zealand coast with the Anchor Line boats. He is the eldest surviving son of the late F. L. Vicke-man, who arrived by the ship Kelso ih 1847, and settled in Wairau, and subsequently removed to Neison. In 186?, Captain Vickerman joined the ship Cissy as an apprentice, and, after passing the Board of trade examination, he joined the Charles Edward, which was then a paddlewheeler, with a square-rigged foremast, as second mate. His first command was the Murray, a beautifully-modelled clip-per-bowed boat, that sailed on a wind as fast as she steamed, and, with the aid of canvas, would keep her course in the very worst of weather. During the sail-ing-ship days, he was second mate on the Colhngwood, trading to Adelaide. Captain Vickerman ha retired at his own request, and intend to live on his property at Pangatotar. Motueka.
