FROM THE JUNGLE.
CHARLESTON'S ORIGIN. . CAPETOWN, December 17. The churches have launched an offensive against the Charleston because it approximates the barbaric dances of the natives. Dr. Terrel, Methodist Superintendent of Missions, says the Charleston originated in the jungle. He condemned the Charleston's tendency towards immorality among Europeans and the reactionary effect of it on the natives, who had been weaned from their barbaric customs. Dean Palmer, who spent 20 years in native territories, stated that the natives are wondering why the missionaries stamped out tribal dances while Europeans indulge in reminiscent contortions and postures. The Rev. Mr. Jack (Baptist) points out that women danced in a state of undress. The Charleston would guide them back to savagery. The Rev. Mr. Gardener (Presbyterian) says the Charleston will make tha natives lose their respect for Europeans.
