DEAREST CHRISTMAS CARD.
The costliest Christmas card ever made was prepared at the order of an Indian prince for presentation to a lady of high rank whom he greatly admired. Although the card measured only 12in by lOin, it involved six months' incessant work for the artists who produced it. The card i was to be of ivory, but ordinary ivory ! would not do. Forty elephants were killed before tusks of exactly the right quality were obtained to yield the thin i ivory card. On it four of the most I talented Indian artists reproduced no j fewer than 10,000 scenes from the life of the Hindu prophet, Buddha. Round the | edge of the masterpiece, to form a frame ' for the artists' pictures, forty-four of the ! finest diamonds were set. 1 —— i
