A TARIFF RIDDLE.

DUTY ON HOSPITAL SUPPLIES. REMIT TO CONFERENCE. (By Tel.gra ph.—Special to "Star."* CHRISTCHURCH, this day. "In regard to the importation of chemicals and scientific apparatus, the Christchurch Hospital is at a disadvantage compared with all the educational institutions of this country." This paragraph was contained in a letter from Dr. R. R. D. Milligan, of the Christchurch Hospital, to the meeting of the North Canterbury Hospital Board yesterday, and formed the basis of a remit to the coming conference of the Hospital Boards Association, which the board decided to forward together with Dr. Milligan's letter. "At present," stated the doctor, "we are charged a Customs duty of 20 per cent on 'organic' chemical substances. On the other hand, various chemicals, such as gold chloride and ferrous sulphide, a_e admitted duty free. This is a riddle to me."'
