GREAT SOUTH ROAD.

PROGRESS OP CONCRETING. ADVICE TO MOTORISTS. (By Telegrap_.-M.Wn Correspondent.) PAPAKURA, this day. The concretiDg of the Great South Road is continuing more or less favourably tm various sections between Papatoetoe and Papjikura. At Wiri the contractors have completed. about fifteen chains of the full 18ft width of concrete. The Manukau County Coiihcii's clerk of works, Mr. R. Mays, states however, that at least another month-i work remains to be done before the whole length of the road at present closed will be-laid down. As it will be necessary for the material to set for a further month before allowing its use by heavy t____c. it will probably be the end of February before this portion of the road will be open to the general public; Good progress has been made with the Papakura contract, and nearly a mile of road has been laid in a 9ft strip of Concrete. The traffic route on the opposite side of the road is in a rough condition, but quite passable. The Manurewa and other contracts have been delayed at various intervals, and it has been stated that a shortage of metal was responsible. This state of affairs will require, to be rectified if the road is to be. feady for use before the advent of winter conditions. The deviation road at Wiri is cutting up badly under the abnormal traffic. Provided, however, that ho heavy rain is experienced before Christmas the travelling public should suffer very little actual inconvenience. The- traffic over the Great South Road on public holidays is astonishing, and motorists will require to exercise great caution in negotiating corners and narrow parts on deviation roads. The Manurewa Town Board has shown its appreciation of this fact by stationing a traffic controller at a sharp corner to the north of the township, and this arrangement will continue right through the busy holiday period.
