HEATHCOTE-wTLLIAMS SHIELD. AUCKLAND GRAMMAR WIN. MARGIN OF 122 RUNS. By defeating Christchurch Boys' High School by a margin of 122 runs at Eden Park yesterday, Auckland Grammar School retained their hold on the Heath-cote-Williams Shield. The match could scarcely be regarded as a satisfactory one, owing to the wretched weather conditions that prevailed for a considerable part of the three playing days, and were the game to be played over again tomorrow, the result might very easily be reversed. The visitors had the worst of the luck so far as the weather was concerned, and from Tuesday onwards, they were fighting an uphill battle. The luck oi the weather, however, is all part of the game, and the winners deserve every credit for the manner in which they adapted themselves to the conditions ruling. When Grammar's second innings closed for 204 yesterday, leaving the challengers 257 runs to make to win. it was apparent that they had only a very slender chance of victory. Thome adopted the right tactics by going for the bowling from the jump, but the ultra-cautious methods of those that followed him settled any chance the Christchurch boys had of pulling the game out of the fire. With eight wickets down for 77, it did not look as if the visitors would reach a hundred, but a dashing display by the last two men, Henry and Escott, took the score to 134 before Henry was bowled by Schnauer. The Grammap School captain and Cashmore shared the bowling honours between them. Scores: — AUCKLAND GRAMMAR SCHOOL. First Innings 182 Second Innings 204 CHRISTCHURCH BOIS' HIGH SCHOOL.
