THE FARMER AS SPECULATOR.

"HANGING ON" TO BUTTER. According to the "Poverty Bay Herald" practically none of last season's Kia Ora butter has as yet been sold in England, the directors having held out for more than is being offered. The butter market has been gradually improving, and although at one stage little more than 140/ was being offered, the price is now 165/. The directors expect that before Christmas the price will go still higher, in which case it is probable the company will commence unloading. Originally it had been hoped to sell the whole of the butter for at least 180/ per cwt, but although this price will not be secured, the results for the season will probably be better than many of the suppliers had anticipated since the recent slump in butter prices.
