WOMEN JUSTICES.
FIRST BATCH APPOINTED. MINISTERIAL ANNOUNCEMENT. FOUR AUCKLANDERS INCLUDED. (3x Tela-si-p-.—S r -e=_l to -Star.*** WELLINGTON, this day. Although New Zealand's original legislation authorised the appointment of any renutable person to the Commission of Peace, it was held that women were not inclnded, and a special starute was passed to remedy the anomaly. In announcing the appointment of eighteen women justices, the Hon. F. J. Rolleston (Minister of Justice), states that the Government has decided to confine the first appointments to women already serving as associate members of Children's Courts and to those who hold prominent positions in the community, either on local bodies or in women's or social organisations. A further list of men Justices will be gazetted immediately after the New Tear. The following are the first women Justices appointed in New Zealand: — Blanche Eleanor Caroaehan, Onehunga; Annie Jane Corliss, Wellington; Nora Stuart Dick, Dunedin; Nellie Elizabeth Fenser, Anckland; Annie Isobel Freer, Christchurch: Janet Fraser, Wellington; Annie Elizabeth Herbert, Christchurch; Sarah Elizabeth Jackson, Auckland; Cybele Ethel Kirk, Wellington; Edith Frances Cloquet Leech, Dunedin; Elizabeth Reid McCcmbs, Simmer. Christchurch; Annie McVicar, Wellington; TfiMa Margaret Northcroft, Anckland; Mary Raymond, Timaru; E-lalie Yi o ] e t Roberts, Dnneain; Eveline Anne Mary Roberts, Christchurch: Jane Elizabeth Runciman, Dunedin; and Elizabeth Best Taylor, Christchurch.
