Queensland had first lease of the wicket in the Sheffield Shield match against Victoria, but shaped rather disappointingly, being all dismissed for 147 (GUI 36, L. Oxenham 19, Higgins 19). ■Blackie took four wickets for 49, and Morton three for 39. Victoria made 108 runs with the loss of no wickets, Woodfull making 50 and Pon6ford 58. The wicket was covered during the heavy rain of the previous day and was not affected, but the outfield was sodden and slow. The visitors made a poor showing against the bowling of Blackie and Morton. Woodfull and Ponsford made an excellent opening for Victoria, handling the bowling with great freedom. The home side in the first innings made 500 (V. Richardson 157, Alexander 55, Pritchard 40, Grimmett 48). Bowling, Mailey took six wickets for 191 runs and Kippax two for 50. New South Wales lost three' wickets for 203 runs. The chief contributors were: Steele 28, Phillips 54, Andrews 66 and Kippax 39.

Richardson gave a great display, his score being made in 222 minutes, making his average for Sheffield Shield matches this season 128. Grimmett played lively cricket. Mailey troubled the others. At the Stadium last night Tiger Payne, the American coloured middleweight boxer, knocked out George Thompson, the heavy-weight champion of Australia, in one round with a heavy blow on the side of the face. At Melbourne De Leon knocked out Jack Jones in the seventeenth round of a wait-fought battle. Billy Grime retained the light-weight championship of Australia by knocking our Uren in the seventh round. Grime led on points all the way. SWIMMING. RACES IN AUSTRALIA. SYDNEY, December 19. The ladies' 100 yds backstroke swimming match for the championship of New South Wales was won by Miss M. Mealing in lm 21 3-ss, the Australian record. The visiting Japanese swimmers, Taikaishi and Saito, at the Brisbane Swimming Association's carnival, easily defeated the Queensland champions in the 100 metres backstroke and 400 metres scratch races, the times being lm 12 2-5s I and 5m 21 4-ss.
