SNATCHER OF PURSES.
AN HOTEL NUISANCE. THREE MONTHS IN GAOL (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, Friday. "His long suit is going to a hotel and taking money from men who are not sober. It is impossible to say a good word for him," said Sergeant Hewitt, when referring to Arthur McKeever, who was charged in the Magistrate's Court with stealing £2 from Samuel Luke at Bluff on Monday. Accused was not represented by counsel and pleaded not guilty.
Sergeant Hewitt said that on Labour Day the police received information that a man had stolen £2 from another man in an hotel in .Bluff. When questioned McKeever denied stealing the money and told the sergeant he could have any money found in his possession. He was searched and two £1 notes were fo_n_ in his underclothing. After hearing further evidence and considering the matter with the probation officer the magistrate said that accused's record was a bad one and the probation officer was not prepared to take the risk of looking after him. Accused was sentenced to three months' imprisonment.
