FORTY YEARS' SERVICE.
DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION. WILL RETIRE AT END OF YEAR (By Telegraph—Special to "Star.") WELLINGTON, this clay.
Dr. J. Oaughley, Director of Education, has given notice of his intention to retire on superannuation at the end of this year, after 40 years' service. Born in Auckland in 1871, Dr. Caughley graduated after attending Canterbury College, Victoria College and Auckland University College. For eight years and a-half he was an assistant master at the Napier Main School, and then, after service in country schools, he became assistant at the Wellington Normal School and Training College. In 1910 he became headmaster of the West Christchurch District High School, where the secondary department contained 200 pupils. At the beginning of 1916 he was appointed Assistant Director of Education, becoming Director in 1921. At various times Dr. Caughley has occupied the highest official positions in the New Zealand Educational Insti-' tutc.
