DISAPPEARANCE OF FURS.
SMITH AND GREEN CHARGED. I GUILTY OF RECEIVING. The trial of Edward Ernest Green (Mr. McLiver) and Vincent John Smith on charges of breaking and entering the premises of Walter Woodgrove Piatt and stealing two fur coats and 14 furs, of a 1 total value of £110 14/, and further, with receiving, was concluded yesterday afternoon, before Mr. Justice Herdman, at the Supreme Court. Evidence was given by Edward George Brown, a second-hand dealer, who said the accused came to him and offered the stolen property for sale. Witness offered £75 for them, hut said he would require time to see a friend about the money. Detective Moon said the property was recovered from 60, Hepburn Street, in a room occupied by Smith and two other men. Mr. McLiver submitted that the only evidence against Green was that he went to the second-hand dealer tp make a sale. It was quite clear from his statement to the police that he did not know the .goods had been stolen. Mr. Meredith, Crown Prosecutor; said it was clear that Smith had personally tried' to sell the furs. In addition, they were found in his room. The jury found both accused guilty of receiving stolen property, with a strong recommendation to mercy in the case of Greeh. • His HOnor said he would take into account the recommendation, but it was unfortunate, as Green already had six convictions for theft and other offences. Prisoners would be remanded for sentence until Wednesday.
