FIRE AT BIRKENHEAD.

FOUR-ROOMED DWELLING BURNED. Fire last evening destroyed the dwellinghouse in Mokoia Road, Birkenhead, of Mr. Enoch Cottle, an employee at the Chelsea Sugar Works. Mr. Cottle had used the kitchen fire for the evening meal in the absence of his wife at Auckland on a visit to friends. After tea he went for a stroll along the road, and on opening the door on his return he discovered the' house was full of smoke.- He gave the alarm, and the rirebell at Northcote was rung by Constable C. Warneford, who was advised by telephone. The Northcote firemen were soon on the scene, and extinguished the flames, which had enveloped the building, comprising four rooms of wood. The insurances comprised £300 on the house in the Northern Office, and £200 on the furniture in the Alliance Office.
