PERIL ON THE SEA.
GRIM FIGHT FOR LIFE. MONTH ON BLAZING SHIP. FUMES FROM MAIZE CARGO. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received U a.m.) LONDON, October 22. A month's perilous existence on a blazing ship with flames sweeping from the holds across the blistering deck was the experience of the crew of tie steamer Tregantle, which has arrived at Liverpool. The vessel left Rosario, South America, laden with 7200 tons of maize. Spontaneous combustion fired the bunker coal and the flames were communicated to the cargo. The crew vainly fought the flames. Volunteers were lowered into the holds directing the play of water from hoses amid the suffocating fumes from the maize, necessitating two minute • spells. The vessel took refuge at Cape Verde (west of Africa) where the fire was beaten out and a thousand tons of damaged cargo were jettisoned. The vessel remained there while the officers and crew, numbering thirty-four, recovered from burn 3 received while fighting the fire.
