ARTIST LANDS MISS CANTERBURY,
'~' (By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") CHRISTCHURCH, this day. "She's sweet, petite and lovable; she's innocent and modest; and, above' all, she's English—all English." That is the way Mr. T. H. Jenkins, the well-known Dunedin artist and one of the judges in the "Miss Otago" contest, described '"Miss "Canterbury." "She is so unaffected and graceful, so. rdemure and unsophisticated; she's—" what shall I say now—well, a typical heroine of a musical comedy—just a little - darling that- one cannot help liking," he continued. ;\ "What has struck you, as an artist, about .her?'' he was asked. "Her modesty and. unassuming grace," •• came the qfcick response/ "She is not ' the classica? type of beauty," Mr. Jenkins ' said, "neither is -she the. stage type, although, as I say, she reminds mc of a : lovable little heroine of a musical : comedy. She is the little girl that every- ; body loves • because they cannot help : ; loving her; ! She has character and her :' soul is reflected in her face. She looks ! older than- fifteen, but ehe has a charm ;of youth about her.: She is ! the English .; type arid as Canterbury is recognised .'fas a piece Of England, the province has * a fitting ' representative in Mavis rPycroft." A MAYOR'S OPTIMISM. i'- Dunedin folk recognise, a dangerous rival in."Miss Canterbury," but the • Mayor, Mr. H. L. Taple'y, M.P., declares that Otago can, claim the winner in the great beauty contest. "We are glad that Christchurch Jias given the people of Dunedin an opportunity of seeing their beauties," he said. i.. "We are glad personally to meet "Miss I Canterbury" and her maid of honour.
