Open. jean MacLachlan (Wellington), 9S points Gwenth McNaughton, 96 points 2 florrie Brook (Huntly), 90 points... 3 Xhe judge said he had never seen anything finer than the work of the winners. Miss MacLachlan gained the maximum points under the headings of position, time and general, and lost only one point under each of the headings of interpretation and execution. Miss McNaughton could improve in high-cutting and her hand work was slightly exaggerated. Recitation. ! Boys, 14-16, "The Houses." (Kipling). ! jCo'el Year, S6 points 1 Bruce Martin, 71 points 2 Clifford Everett, 04 points 3 The judges said this was a very difficult selection and very tricky to remember. It was difficult to get the correct emphae is and modulation of the voice and t nD right spirit of the lines. The winner gave a fine rendering. Recitation. Boys, 12-13, "Be Thorough." George Boyle, 79 points 1 Roy Ferguson, 78 points 2 Edward Tolley, 77 points 3 This was a very strong class and the work was very pleasing to listen to. Humorous Recital. J Ladies. Own Selection. Hiss Eilene Murdoch, 77 points 1 Miss Doris Messer, 75 points 2 ICss Winifred Croshcr, 72 points.... 3 As a whole this was really a very bad class, said the judge. It was deplorable, but the three recalls were good. The winner gave an artistic performance and showed appreciation of the humour. Musical Monologue. Gentlemen. Own Selection. Hr. Frederick Hargrea vis. S3 points.. 1 Mr. F. Clayton Armstn : ,_, 73 points 2 Mr. Walter o'Connell, 70 points 3 The winner gave an artistic perfor- \ mance, with clever characterisation, and excellent combination of words and music. Flute Solo. Mr. Thomas Kenderdine, 80 points... 1 i Mr. Arthur Copeland (Glenmore), 58 points 2 | , There were only two competitors. The judge said the flute was not a good j solo instrument and there was not a j great deal of good music available for | it. Neither competitor chose a very > good piece. The winner did better in spite of having chosen a more difficult number. Piano Solo. Over 18. Restricted class. "Aufschwung" (Schumann). Mr. Arthur Reid, 80 points 1 Miss Doris Burns, 79 points 2 Mr. Owen Jensen, 78 points 3 The playing was surprisingly good for competitors who had never previously won a first prize, said the judge. Boy's Song. 12 and under 10 . "A May Morning." Any key. (Denza). David Campbell, 75 points 1 David Lunny, 74 points 2 George Scale, 73 points 3 The piece selected was a very unsuitable one, said the judge, probably owing to the difficulty of finding pieces of which the music was procurable. The contest was a very close one. Sacred Song. Mr. Arch. Macpherson, 79 points.... 1 The Rev. G. M. Yule (Mangapai), 70 points 2 This was a very, very disappointing section, said the judge. It was a dismal section. It should be a fine class, but _ os t 0 f t ne performers had chosen old, antiquated songs which should never l«ve been printed. Mezzo-Soprano Solo. . Open.
