MISPLACED SYMPATHY.
(To the Editor.) ' Sir, —As a patriot 1 was disgusted and ' indignant at the letter from your cor- ] respondent "J. Everitt." According to him we should not be guided by regard for our fellow countrymen in the mer- _ chart communities in China; we should J not, according to him, think about the j millions of pounds of money invested in, ] China by Britishers. We should help China to become strong and free, and should sympathise *with "the trade unionists and students who control the Kuo Men Fung. The offences of these scallywags against British interests are numerous. The general strike rising out of the Shanghai affair was organised by them, and unfortunately it was success- , ful. Due to them too, was the nationwide boycott of British goods which has \ lost so many millions of pounds. Further, ( much of the increasing insolence of the natives is directly due to them. No, not i sympathy with Canton, but drastic ] action is the need. A glance at the j European Press of the treaty ports will j show general agreement on the neces- £ sity of this. Only trade jealousies pre- f vent the European powers working . together.—T am, etc., PATRIOT. ]
