AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS.
THE SUSSEX MATCH
VISITORS LEAD BY TO RUNS. GOOD BATTING BY BOWLEY. (By Cable.—Press Association.— Copyright.) (Received 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, August 30. The weather was warm and overcast and the wicket good when the Australians resumed their innings against Sussex at Brighton. The attendance was 12,000.
Bardsley was more confident than on the previous day, but was uneasy when facing Tate. He batted 257 minutes and hit 12 fours. The Australian innings finished in a few minutes.
Both Bowley and Tate gave difficult chances early in the Sussex innings. Tate was aggressive, and lifted Grimmett twice in succession to the on boundary, and cleverly gathered runs on the unprotected leg side. When the total was 44 he was smartly snapped at the wicket.
Bowley was assertive and gained runs at the expense of all the bowling, which was changed frequently. He played a vigorous, safe game, till taken by Andrews. His score included seven fours, and the board roar) 120 for three.
After Bowley's departure tbu cricket was somnolent. Botii Holdswortli and Cook avoided risks, satisfying themselves with singles which were easily obtainable owing to the wide Held. Holdsworth was slow but »ure, and drove cleanly, giving no chances. Anxious to reach 50 he called for a run, but Cook failed to respond, and Holdswortli was unable to regain the crease. The score now wa3 175 for five.
Cook's batting was attractive. He drove powerfully, but succumbed to a catch at tlie wicket, Uldneld juggling with the ball and holding it at the lourtli attempt —2UB for six.
Williams and Harold Gilligau scored freely by singles off the slow bowlers until Williams was trapped into hitting against the break, only to be well taken by Grimmett at mid-oil.
The remaining wickets fell quickly, the innings closing just on time. Details of the scores are: — AUSTRALIA.—First Innings.
