RAROTONGA SHOCKS HIM. HOME BREW BY THE TIN. (Received 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, August 30. Robert Keable, the well-known author of "Simon Called Peter," has arrived at Liverpool from the South Seas, via Canada. He said that though Rarotonga was a prohibition island, he saw more drunkenness there in a month than during a whole lifetime. He had seen three men drink three kerosene tins full of native home brew between lunch and dinner.— (A. and N.Z.) CHANNEL CROSSED AGAIN. A MAN THIS TIMS. GERMAN BREAKS ALL RECORDS (Received 1 p.m.) LONDON, August 30. A German, Vierkotter, swam the Channel in twelve hours forty-two minutes, starting from Cape Grisnez at 1.35 in the morning and landing at the South Foreland light. Yierkntter is the sixth man to succeed since 1875. He creates a new record. The previous best performance was that of Tirahoschi. in 192.3, whose time was stxte<?n hours, thirty-three minutes. Vierkotter was accompanied by a French tng motor boat and rowing boat. The sen was choppy near the end — (Renter.) ENGLISH GIRL WANTED. TO BEAT THE EDERLE RECORD. LONDON, August 23. All the expenses of Miss Ederle when she went to Europe to train for the Channel swim were paid by subscriptions from American girl swimmers, according to the "Sketch," and the paper ur<*es English girls to contribute a shilling each to finance a woman champion, to be selected after a series of trials, to attack Miss Ederle's record.
