NEARLY A TRAGEDY.
BLENHEIM HOMESTEAD BURNED. WIFE OVERCOME BY SMOKE. BUT SAVES HER CHILDREN. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) BLENHEIM, this day. The homestead of Mr. John Cantwell, dairy farmer, at Para, on the Blenheim - Picton highway, was/totally destroyed by fire List night, together with its contents and outbuildings. Mrs. Cantwell and her children were at home at the time, Mr. Cantwell being absent. When retiring Mrs. Cantwell heard a strange noise at the rear of the" house and opened the door into the kitchen to investigate. A great billow of smoke enveloped her, and she collapsed. She quickly recovered, however, and hurriedly got the children to safety. No water or assistance was available, and the fire made a clean sweep.
. The buildings were insured for £610 and the contents for £200 in the Phoenix Company. The loss is estimated at £400.
