QUEER DOUBLE MYSTERY.
PUZZLING POLICE OF TWO COUNTIES. A queer mystery of the sort that would have Intrigued Sherlock Holmes is puzzling the police of Essex and Cambridgeshire. The problem is this: Why have two complete sets of Bilk underwear, shoes, and stockings been hidden in East Anglian.lanes, 35 miles from one another, within the last month ? When a farm labourer working In a field at Little Totham, Essex, last month, found an almost brand new set of women's under clothing Just inside a hedge by tbe road the Essex police made a searching investigation of the affair, but without success. The discovery was more or less forgotten till the other day when a similar set Of clothing was found bidden in a hedge on another lonely road near Meldreth, near Cambridge. Four theories have been suggested: (1) That the clothes were removed by persons before committing suicide; (2) That they were removed from somebody who had been the victim of foul play; (3) That they had been hidden for a hoax; (4) That they had been left in the hedges by somebody who was anxious to dispose of them.
None of these theories, however, is well supported by the facts. No body of a suicide has been discovered in the neighbourhoods and no woman likely to have worn such clothing is known to be missing It is extremely unlikely the articles were hidden for a practical joke.
