NEW AUSTRALIAN SUBMARINES
The Commonwealth Government is falling into line with the plan of tho Admiralty to allot names to submarines in future, and the two vessels building by Messrs. Vickers will I>»> called the Ox-ley and the Otway. As with the ships of the Fleet Unit of 1000, these first vessels of the post-war programme are thus given names of local .significanceCaptain Albany Otway, X.X.. who was president of the Transport Board over a century ago. gave his name to Cape Otway, in Victoria, and thus the new submarine has a double nautical association. Moreover, there was an H.Ms. Otway in tlie late war, by the , taking up of the merchantman of that name as an auxiliary cruiser. The Oxlev is so called ' after one of the early Surveyors-General | of New South Wales and a famous explorer.
