GRADING FIJI COPRA.
PROPOSED LEGISLATION. (From Onr Own Correspondent.) SUVA, August 13. Tor many years Fiji copra has been a reproach* to the colony. This is not due to any inferiority of her coconuts, but solely to a supineness on the part of the Government, which made no effort to supervise the grading or manufacture of the export. The natives are notoriously lazy, and they will sell the most awful rubbish if anyone will buy it. In this way the Fiji copra has gradually fallen in quality until it has become a very serious matter for the colony, as the"buyers overseas have notified exporting fi rms here, that if the copra Joes not at once improve in quality they will cease t0 buy. The Government has at last listened to the protests of the loml Press, and now oilers a bill, which, it is j d> win meet the situation. The new bill is !.,, ;ed somewhat on tie inos of the W tern Samoa Act, winch has proved s ,. : - -cwsful in the other group in imp, „, ;he v of their copra.
