OBITUARY.

DR. CHARLES W. ELIOT,

NEW YORK, August 23

Dr. Charles W. Eliot, President Emeritus of Harvard T'nivcrsity, died yesterday at the age of 02 years.— (A. and N.Z.) Charles William Eliofc had been for many years one of the leading figures in the educational life of the United States. At the early age of 35 years he was elected president of Harvard University holding the position for nearly forty years until his retirement in 1900 when lie was accorded the

dignity of President Emeritus. Worldfamous for his high scholarship and ripe culture. Dr. Eliot had been granted many foreign orders and distinctions, and was a member and fellow of numerous academies and societies.

He was also the author of many publications on educational and scientific subjects. In 1915 he was awarded the first gold medal of the American Academy of Arts and Letters as a recognition of "'special distinction."
