CAUGHT IN THE ACT.

TAKING BOOKS FROM LIBRARY ELDERLY WOMAN THE CULPRIT. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") CHRISTCHURCH this day. Since the recent thefts of books from the Canterbury- Publk Library a vigilant watch has been kept with a view to preventing a recurrence. On Wednesday an assistant detected an elderly woman in the act of appropriating two novels. No action was taken at the time, but Mr. E. J. Bell, the librarian, posted himself at the door. When the woman walked out he demanded the books, and, after some demur on her part, she opened her bag and handed them over. He also obtained her membership ticket and told her not to return.

"We had suspected the woman for some time," he remarked in relating the incident.
