A young coloured man named George Bottles sent to gaol to-day for three months for the theft of a purse from a woman he met last night in the street. Verdict returned by a jury at the Supreme Court this morning: "We have decided to give the prisoner the benefit of the doubt and return a verdict of not guilty, with the hope that he will pay the money back at some future date." Michael Keady, licensee of the Britomart Hotel, on trial to-day on a charge of receiving stolen liquor. Seventeen jurymen were challenged when called for the trial—thirteen by the Crown and four by the defence . Nine new cases of pneumonic influenza to-day, including two at Mount Albert, the remainder being in the country. Two deaths have occurred at the Auckland Hospital and one at Hamilton Hospital in the past 24 hours. George Vincent, who pleaded guilty tonegligent driving in Edendale Road, causing bodily harm, admitted this mofr.iug to probation for three years, and disqualified from holding a motor driving license for five years. Costs and compensation amounted to £60. At the annual meeting to-day of the New Zealand Insurance Company it was announced that revenue from premium.* had fallen off by £4000 odd in the past year, but interest earned from investments had gone up, returning 5.19 per cent, as against 5.11 per cent last year.
