HATCHERY AT TOKAANU.

FOR LAKE TAUPO TROUT. (By Telegraph—Special to "Star. , ) WELLINGTON, this day. Amongst ardent anglers there is a controversy always existing as to which lake in the thermal district contains the biggest and heaviest trout. Some '"knights of the road" maintain that it is from Lake Taupo and its tributaries, near Tokaanu, that the best trout can be obtained, while others give the blue riband to Lake Rotoiti, Tarawera or Rotorua. But it is all a matter of opinion founded on the experience of the angler. Some, including the Chief Inspector of Fisheries (Mr. L. F. Ayson), who speaks with a sound trout fishing knowledge of New Zealand, declare, however, that Lake Taupo is stocked with most perfect specimens of rainbow trout, and that it is from these fish that eggs of the best quality can be obtained for stocking other waters. The Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. R. F. Bollard) has stated that the Government, relying on reports of experts, has decided to erect a trout hatchery at Tokaanu, a little townlet on the banks of Lake Taupo. Yesterday morning the Minister announced that the work of erecting the hatchery would be undertaken forthwith, so as to have it ready for next season.
