ARAB STOWAWAYS.
A DREADFUL TRAGEDY
6TOKERS SENT TO PRISON,
PARIS, July 9. Six men charged with the manslaughter of Arab stowaways on the steamer Sidi Ferruch, were sentenced to two years' imprisonment and were also fined 600 francs, in addition to costs. One man was acquitted.— (Reuter.) Forty-eight Arabs stowed away among the coal on the steamer at Algiers. When the ship arrived at Marseilles eleven were dead, two were sent to hospital, seventeen were all right, but eighteen were missing. The ballast was liable to be flooded when cargo was displaced, and it was said at the time that the stokers must have known this. It has therefore evidently been assumed that the stokers knew of the presence of the. Arabs.
