ESSAY COMPETITION.
DISAPPOINTING RESULTS. Groat disappointment was expressed by the members of the Victoria League Executive at their meeting held on Wednesday lasc at the small number of entries and the low standard of work sent in for thu League's essay competition, the subject being, "'How Best to l'roiuotc the Unity of the Empire." The judges reported that besides being of very poor quality, many were carelessly •written, not one being -worthy of the large prize offered. However, the League is anxious to keep faith with the boys and girls and the prizes have been awarded as follows:—First prize (£7). Honor Gordon Holmes, "Wysliule," Mauku; second prize (€3), E. Peter Allen, 15, Market Koad, Kemuera. The competition was open to all boys and girle in the provincial district of Auckland under 17 years of age, and the prizes will be presented at the League's "At Home" in the Lyceum Club on Thursday, July 29.
