In addition to being charged witK drunkenness in Kingston Street yesterday, Mary Huxford (35) had to explain why she used insulting language. j Accused said that she did not remenl" ber anything about it at all, so Con* stable Patterson got into the witness I box to jog her memory. He said that following a street squabble accused hung about and made use of the language several times. She was fined £1, or 24 hours, oa the second charge, and convicted and dis« charged for inebriacy. DISORDERLY IN FRUIT SHOP. Yesterday, Alfred Ernest Frost (21)' went into the shop of a Chinese fruiterer !in Queen Street, where lie tried to start 1 a fight with another man. He also toyed about with a couple of packets of peanuts, according to what the arresting constable told the magistrate. I Frost, gn a charge of being disorderly; while drunk, was lined £2 and costs. WORTHY OF A CHANCE. Having already pleaded guilty to the theft of a banjo-mandolin valued at £5 10/, the property of A. W. Haggis, Maurice William Laverv (1(3), came up sentence. ; Senior-Detective Hammond said that the youth stole the instrument from the Lyttelton Sailors' Home and went to Wellington. From the Empire City he walked to Palmerston North, where he pledged the banjo. After some trouble the police had recovered the instrument. Lavery had never been in trouble before and was worthy of a chance. In ordering accused to come up f" r sentence within 12 months, Mr. Poynton told Lavery that he must report to the probation officer and refund 30/ to the pawnbroker who had bought the banjo. YOUTHFUL COLLECTORS. A couple of youths, whose names were ordered to be sup]-re>»ecl, were eacH placed on probation for 12 months for obtaining 9/ from various persons by falsely representing that they were collecting on behalf of Nurse Clayton, j
