The decline hail been chiefly due to the rcsirii - "'."Ue on immigration. Mr. Brown ;u- • referred to the silent ! penetration uf Aria by the Chinese, and J tv the , movement of African natives tv | mining and agricultural centres. i Messrs. Evuit and Kitron. representing | Australia, sensed a dead set ayaiust the White Australia l.i.iicy. This i= perhapa explained by the fact that in the i.nly.Use Englishspeaking count rk'a are represented: Britain, Australia, lunada. South Africa aud Sew Zealand, ajruinst 17 European and Asiatcc countries?, the latter indud-l in" India, the representatives of whicl.™ ere all Indians. j 3£r. W. represents New Zealand. The United Males is not represented. British delegate:- included Mr. Ramsay JlacDonald. Mr. Arthur Henderson. Mr. (jeo. Lansbury. and Mr. C. T. Cramp. Hr. Evatt. of Australia, illustrated the deliberate attack that had been made on the White Australia policy by quoting the proposal of the Independent Labour party, sponsored by Mr. F. \V. Jowitt, and Mr. David Kirkwood. Labour ILP.: "Migrants should not be e:;-jlude<l purely on the grounds of race or colour." Other proposal- emanating from European or Asiatic bodies implicitly, if rot explicitly, betrayed similar hostility to a White Australia policy. Messrs. Evatt and Kitson determined to fight these proposals to the last ditch. Also other sinister proposals from Europeans desiemed to create an international authority to overreide the peoples in the Dominions represented by Trades and Labour' organisations.— (Reuter.) WOMEN OFFICIALS. (Received 1 p.m.) LONDON. June 22. A conference of the British Commonwealth League in London discussed the position of women in connection with Empire settlement, and adopted a resolution calling on the Governments of the Dominions to employ an adequate number of women in salaried and voluntary positions in all schemes of migration.—(A. and N.Z.j
