TROTTING.

AUCKLAND WINTER MEETING.

VISITORS WIN FIVE RACES.

SOME EXCITING FINISHES.

The closing stages of what should prove the most successful season of trotting in Auckland were entered upoa on Saturday at Epsom, when the Auckland Trotting Club opened the two-days' winter meeting. For years it has been a source of complaint with followers of the light harness sport in the North, that from the autumn till spring without a meeting was too big a break, and after much consideration the A.T.C., vhen arranging the bill-of-fare for the present season, decided upon a winter gathering instead of the usual two-days' fixture in the autumn. Unfortunately, the weather during the past couple oi months has been particularly bad, but this fact did not affect the entries, which were exceptionally large, and the fields on Saturday afternoon must have been a record.

The club was fortunate in getting a fine afternoon, but the track was heavy and the times slow. The racing was particularly interesting, several close finishes being witnessed. The amount passed through the totaiisator during the afternoon was £49.G20 10/, again-t f>0.200 at the autumn meeting last year, when there were eight races :iga:ust seven on Saturday.
