PROGRESS OF AVONDALE.

MEETING OF COUNCIL. ROADING IMPROVEMENTS. The Avondale Borough Council met on Wednesday last, the Mayor, Mr. \V. J. Tait, presiding. The final payment on the hot-mix plant was left over pending a report on the working of the plant. Notificiition was received from the Neuchatel Asphalt Company that it proposed giving a top-coating of bitumen to portions of the Rosebanlc Road as soon as the state of the weather permitted. It was stated that the contractors had given a five-year guarantee, and that it was the general experience of hot-mix roading that the faults developed at an early stage.' The engineer was instructed to report on the advisability of constructing a footpath in Wharf Road, and also a short section in Station Road; also to report on damage alleged to have been done to properties in Roberton Road and Great North Road during road and footpath construction work.

The use of a section on the Great North Road for the purpose of erecting a brick shop was approved, although the total area was slightly smaller than that provided in the by-laws.

The storm water drain in the! Great North Road was reported as being finished, thus bringing to completion the storm water drainage scheme in the locality. \

The building inspector reported that thirteen permits, amounting to a value of £512 10/ had been issued during the past fortnight. There were twenty-six houses in the course of erection.

Mr. J. W. Thompson, chairman of the Works Committee, recommended that as the power unit at the quarry was insufficient to stand up to the. work, a larger motor be procured : also, that a large amount of overburden should be removed from the quarry.—lt was resolved that the question of the motor he referred to the Works Committee, nnd that labour be engaged to remove the overburden as suggested.

The conductor of the Avondale Municipal Band' reported that there were now twenty-four playing members, and asked that the council should supplement the band's funds to the extent of fl to £1 up' to £50, to allow the band to obtain: uniforms.—lt was resolved that it be a rcommendntion to the Finance Committee to allow for this when bringing down the estimates for the current year.
