Twenty Chinese were carried off for ' ransom by pirates who captured a motor boat in the business section of the Pearl ■ River, Canton, on May 6. The captives were taken to one of the numerous river islands, where for many years pirates have had their strongholds, defy- ' ing authorities. It is the pirates' custom to send relatives portions of the captive's body until the ransom is paid. During the steamer Tofua's recent trip to Western Pacilic Islands, a highly enjoyable dance was given on" board when the vessel was at Nukualofa. A number of white residents at the port were included among the guests. Two bands were in attendance, and the decorations left nothing to be desired.
